Naga Panchami is a popular Hindu festival celebrated in India. It is celebrated in most of the parts of the country. However the celebrations are at its best in Bengal, Maharashtra and Southern part of the country. The tradition of worshipping snake is very long in India, even before the arrival of Aryans in India. The five Nagas that are worshipped on Nag Panchami are Ananta, Vasuki, Taxak, Karkotaka and Pingala. The Pooja of Nag Panchami is done on the similar lines in all the parts of the country. The snake god is offered milk and turmeric on this day and prayed on this day.

According to the Puranic myth, it is said that the origin of Nagas have been directly related to Brahma and that is why they are considered auspicious. It is believed that Brahma’s son Kashyapa had four wives. His first wife is the mother of all Devas, second to Garudas, third to Nagas and fourth to Daityas. The third wife of Kashyapa, who was named Kadroo gave birth to Nagas after whom the Nagas are also known as Kadrooja. They were once the rulers of nether world, the Patal Loka.

The Naga Panchami, which falls on the fifth day of the moonlit-fortnight in the month of Shravan according to the Hindu calendar (July /August according to the Gregorian calendar), is celebrated in order to commemorate the existence of the Nagas. It is said that the prominent Nagas in the Puranas that are to be worshipped are Anant, Vasuki, Shesh, Padma, Kanwal, Karkotak, Kalia, Aswatar, Takshak, Sankhpal, Dhritarashtra and Pingal. Though, some historians claim that these were not snakes but Naga Kings of various kingdoms which were worshipped as Gods.

The association of snakes, gods and human in Indian legends have also promoted the widespread believe of the fact that snakes have an eternal attachment with the Hindu religion. It is evident from the Hindu mythologies that how snakes have been associated with Lord Krisha, Shiva and Vishnu in various stages of their existence. The existence of snakes in the ancient Hindu puranas and texts also prove the long association of Human race and the snakes.

On the day of Naga Panchami in Shravan month, followers of Nagas worship Naga Devata (Cobras) with full devotion. They visit ttemples and snake pits and offer prayers to the snakes. Milk and silver jewelry is offered to the Cobras in order to please them and seek their protection from all evils. The devotees also observe a full day fast on this day. Swings are put up in the villages and people enjoy themselves while singing shravan songs.

On this day after taking ritual bath , a snake is made out of cow dung, at the door of house, place of worship. On both the sides of door, the serpent is worshiped with milk, grass, Kusha, sandalwood,Akshat(rice used in worshiping),flower etc. After this, item made of Ladu(sweet) and Malpua is offered to God Snake. It is believed, if you make the snake bath with milk on this day, the free from snake is vanished. It is celebrated in different styles all over India. The festival is celebrated in a special way in India’s south Maharashtra and Bengal. In west Bengal, Assam, and some parts of Orissa, this day, mother of serpents, Goddess Mansa is worshiped. In the temple of Kerala as well, Shesh Naag is particularly worship. On this day, Goddess Saraswati is specially worshiped. It is believed that on this very day, women keep fast and worship God snake in a systematic way. This increases a family’s happiness and wealth and the family has no fear of snake bite. For worshiping Naag Panchami, in the morning after cleaning the house, prepare rice, Sewai etc to offer during Puja. In some parts of the country, food is kept prepared a day before Naag Panchami. And, on the day of Naag Panchami, stale food is eaten. Whole of Shravan Maas, especially on Naag Panchami, digging soil or foundation, ploughing of fields is forbidden. During, the Puja, Snake God should be called and offered a position to be seated. After that, water, flower and sandalwood should be offered on them. The milk, yogurt, sugar, honey and butter of Snake statue should be mixed to form a Panchamrit, which should be used in bathing. And, after that, sandalwood and aroma containing water should be put on the statue. Besides this, Aarti should be done with clothing thread, sandalwood, Haridra, powder, saffron, Sindoor(vermilion), Belpatra, jewellery and garlands of flower, auspicious nectar, lamp of Dhup, Navedya, seasonal fruit, and Tambool. Praying in this way, fulfills our wishes. On this day, Seprent God should be worship with sweet smelling flowers and sandalwood. Because, sweet smell is particularly dear for God Snake. For Puja of Naag Panchami, this mantra should be chanted.

The most popular legend is about Lord Krishna when he was just a young boy. When playing the game of throwing the ball with his cowherd friends, the legend goes to tell how the ball fell into Yamuna River and how Krishna vanquished Kalia Serpent and saved the people from drinking the poisonous water by forcing Kalia to go away. It is an age-old religious belief that serpents are loved and blessed by Lord Shiv. May be therefore, he always wears them as ornamentation around his neck. Most of the festivals that fall in the month of Shravan are celebrated in honour of Lord Shiv, whose blessings are sought by devotees, and along with the Lord, snakes are also worshiped. Particularly on the Nag-Panchami day live cobras or their pictures are revered and religious rights are performed to seek their good will. To seek immunity from snake bites, they are bathed with milk, haldi-kumkum is sprinkled on their heads and milk and rice are offered as "naivedya". The Brahmin who is called to do the religious ritual is given "dakshina" in silver or gold coins some times, even a cow is given away as gift.
